The first LinkedIn message to a recruiter (no copy-paste)
A well-targeted message to a recruiter gets between 15 and 40% replies, versus 2 to 5% for a portal application. The structure that works, two templates, and the follow-up that doesn't push too hard.
Applying through a form means joining a queue. Writing directly to the right person sometimes means jumping ahead. The numbers are clear: a well-targeted message to a recruiter gets between 15 and 40% replies, against 2 to 5% for an application dropped into a portal. And since more than 90% of recruiters source on LinkedIn, that's where they are. The rest is writing a message they actually want to read, not one more copy-paste.
Who to write to
Two useful targets:
- The recruiter in charge of the role. Often visible on the ad, or findable via the company's "People" page (look for "talent", "recruiting", "HR").
- The future manager (the hiring manager). Harder to reach, but they decide. A relevant message can carry real weight.
Either way, one reminder: the person receives between 80 and 150 messages a day. Yours has to read in ten seconds.
The structure of a good first message
Three beats, nothing more:
- A personalised hook. Why this company, this role, this person. A sentence that proves it isn't a mass send.
- One line of proof of value. What you can do, with something concrete. Not your whole CV.
- A clear ask. What you want: a fifteen-minute chat, a view on your application, an introduction.
If you're using an InMail, you have roughly 300 characters that count: get to the point.
Two templates
Reply to a specific offer
Hi [First name], I saw your opening for [role] at [company]. The point about [specific element of the ad] spoke to me: at [X], I [quantified achievement that answers this need]. I've just applied, but wanted to flag it to you directly. Would you be open to a fifteen-minute chat?
Targeted speculative approach
Hi [First name], I'm a [your role] and I follow your work on [specific project, product, topic]. I'm looking for a role in [field] today, and I'd bring [concrete value] to a team like yours. Are you hiring, or do you know someone looking for a profile like mine?
Adapt every line. A template copied as-is is spotted instantly.
The mistakes that kill the message
- Full copy-paste. A message that could go to a hundred people interests no one.
- The wall of text. Three paragraphs, your entire career: no one reads it.
- Asking too much at once. "Could you forward my CV to leadership and recommend me?" to a stranger, no.
- Not following up, or following up three times. Both are mistakes.
The follow-up: one, at the right moment
With no reply after 5 to 7 days, one short, polite follow-up is fair. Just one. Two, and you look pushy. The right dosage is the same as for following up on an application.
